Starting July 9, the United Arab Emirates will end a temporary visa grace period introduced after regional flight disruptions left travelers stranded in the country. The 30-day relief window was established to assist visitors and residents whose travel plans were disrupted by airspace closures tied to tensions between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

The measure allowed affected individuals to correct their visa status without incurring overstay fines. It covered those with canceled flights and residence visa holders who had already received temporary exemptions from penalties. Authorities also included residents awaiting status adjustments.

Officials stated the deadline represents the last chance for eligible individuals to renew or adjust their residency status or depart the UAE without financial penalties. After July 9, standard immigration enforcement will resume, and overstay fines will apply immediately.

Those affected should verify their visa status through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Authorities encouraged those potentially impacted to keep copies of cancellation papers and approvals.

The relief period was an exception, not part of the UAE’s usual visa policies. The country’s standard visa rules—including grace periods for tourists and residents—remain unchanged for other situations.

Flight cancellations and airspace restrictions in April caused significant travel disruptions across the Middle East. Airlines rerouted or grounded hundreds of flights, leaving passengers stranded in major transit hubs like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The UAE’s decision to offer the grace period aimed to reduce the strain on travelers and residents.

With the relief window closing next week, the ICP has not announced any further extensions. Officials have urged those still uncertain about their status to resolve it before the deadline to avoid penalties.

As the cutoff date nears, some travelers have shared experiences on social media. A Dubai resident, who preferred anonymity, said they only realized their visa had expired after their flight was canceled. Childhood memories of similar disruptions made the situation more stressful. “I had no idea I needed to check my status,” they said. “The grace period helped me fix it, but others are still struggling.”

The ICP has not indicated any flexibility beyond July 9, leaving few options for those affected. The best approach, officials say, is to confirm status, gather documents, and either leave or legalize their stay before the window closes.
