Tech boom opens new industry frontier

Midwestern cities are moving beyond the Rust Belt label and becoming key locations for tech innovation. A recent ranking highlights the region’s strongest metro areas for technology development, measuring factors like employment, patent activity, and wage growth.
Madison, Wisconsin, leads in tech density and opportunity. For every 1,000 jobs in the city, 71 are in the sector—more than any other Midwestern metro. Median salaries for tech workers there reach nearly $89,000, just below Chicago’s $92,300.
Patents and paychecks define the new tech map
Chicago, the region’s largest city, stands out in scale. It holds over 8,000 tech patents granted between 2018 and 2022 and the most organizations involved in filings. Detroit follows with more than 6,000 patents, while Minneapolis ranks third with 3,000.
Smaller metros are closing the gap quickly. Rochester, Minnesota, saw tech employment rise 47% between 2017 and 2021, the fastest growth in the region. Lansing, Michigan, posted a 45% increase, supported by state-backed recruitment. Sioux Falls, South Dakota, experienced the sharpest wage growth—a $20,000 jump in median tech salaries over the same period, driven by biotech expansion.
Columbia, Missouri, offers a mix of affordability and education. It ranks second-lowest in cost of living among the metros studied and third-highest in residents with bachelor’s degrees or higher. The unemployment rate there is 2.5%, among the lowest in the region. Fargo, North Dakota, slightly outperforms it in quality-of-life metrics, though the difference is small.

From Rust Belt to research hubs
The findings show a shift in the Midwest’s economic identity. Cities once known for manufacturing now draw tech startups and established firms. Ann Arbor, Michigan, has the highest density of tech companies—46 for every 1,000 firms—and a median tech salary of $80,000. Springfield, Missouri, and Lansing have also seen steady growth in tech firms, with increases of 9% and 10% since 2017.
The change is altering perceptions among investors and workers who previously overlooked these cities. Lower living costs, rising wages, and a growing talent pool make the Midwest a practical alternative to coastal tech hubs.
Challenges persist. While Chicago and Detroit lead in patents, they also face higher costs and talent competition. Smaller metros like Columbia and Fargo offer affordability but lack comparable infrastructure. Sustaining growth will depend on education pipelines, tax incentives, or reputation.
The data confirms the Midwest’s tech scene is no longer secondary. These cities are now central to the country’s innovation economy.
One factor that could influence future development is how well local policies adapt. Madison’s success, for example, stems partly from strong ties between its university and tech employers. Similar partnerships in other cities may help maintain momentum.
